PREJUDICE AND RACISM, 2/e is the long-awaited revision of James Jones' groundbreaking text (originally published in 1972) on this imperative topic. The text is appropriate for a variety of courses: Psychology of Prejudice, Prejudice and Racism, Intergroup Relations, Black Psychology, African-American/Ethnic Studies, Social Problems, Social Psychology, or for courses that are part of a diversity curriculum. This is a classic text that all scholars in the aforementioned fields will remember. The new edition, however, greatly expands upon Jones' 1972 edition. It provides a comprehensive overview of all theory and research on this topic from a variety of disciplines history, social psychology, sociology, African-American studies, anthropology, cultural studies, etc. The new edition will be the ultimate resource in this subject area. Jones is the leading scholar/expert in this field he has defined this area of research and inquiry. It will be a "must have" for many professors across the social sciences.
-Primarily discusses black-white relations; this focus on black-white relations, however, provides a useful paradigm for examining and understanding broader issues/experiences of prejudice and racism.
-Features a personal, anecdotal narrative style. Jones is an excellent storyteller. He weaves theory and research with gripping vignettes and case examples.
-Includes material from a variety of disciplines (i.e. history, psychology, sociology, anthropology, African-American studies) which results in a multi-dimensional analysis of prejudice and racism.
-Jones's multi-dimensional analysis allows students to understand the complex network of factors that contribute to these contemporary social problems.
-Jones's groundbreaking new work/theory on the Psychology of Racism will debut in this text.
The new edition features an innovative three-part organization. These three discrete units provide much flexibility for instructors:
-Part I- Social and Scientific Developments 1500-1990s (Chs 1-5) addresses race relations in America and provides an overview of historical events that have shaped race relations such as slavery, the civil rights movement, the emergence of Afro-American Studies, Affirmative Action, hate crimes, the L.A. riots, OJ trial, etc.
-Part II- The Psychology of Prejudice (Chs 6-11) reviews both classic and current psychological theory/research about prejudice. Topics include stereotyping, intergroup relations, attitudes, stigma, case examples of inter-ethnic conflict (i.e., recent world events that have manifested prejudical attitudes such as intergroup conflicts in Rwanda, Ireland, and Bosnia), and victim reactions.
-Part III- The Psychology of Racism (Chs 12-18) demonstrates a unique psychological model for understanding and examining racism. Topic coverage includes: what is race? defining racism, individual racism, institutional racism, cultural racism, Jones's structural and dynamic model of racism, and antiracism.
