2007-09-06 Not just for body building fans...
I'm not particularly interested in bodybuilding but bought this book after seeing an excerpt in the Observer. Hotten starts as an outsider but becomes smitten with a world that is proud to exist outside of the mainstream whilst craving recognition & the rewards that the interest & affection of the general public would bring. If you're looking for an objective view of bodybuilding look elsewhere - Hotten is in thrall to the world of BB after a while & can appear as an apologist for the excesses & idiosyncracies of those involved.
However, what Hotten is good at is capturing the personalities behind the muscle - not just the competitors but the promoters, trainers & fans. As an insight in to a hidden subculture this is fascinating & compelling stuff, very enjoyable. I've read it twice now & am sure I will again.
