2005-10-20 light hearted reading...
Part travel guide, part account of film-making, this slim book by veteran actor Michael York is decent, funny and smoothly written. It is basically a diary of his time in Russia, while filming Moscow Heat, a thriller that also stars Russia's equvilant of Arnie Schwarzenneggar.
Micheal makes engaging points about the difference between Russia when he first visited in the 70s, and now, in the 00s - with the rise of capitalism being the main factor - oh, and smiles, lots of them!
Also commented on is the different styles of film making between Hollywood and Russia. This book is almost ahead of its time. Its come out just at the start of a revival in Russian film making, and therefore makes an interesting read.
Michael York is also a gracious writer, vividly describing Russia for someone who's never been there, and telling about the places he visits during his down time.
It's a nice slice of life from a respected film actor, and although it has quite a small niche market, I believe many people will find it interesting.
