A syllabus-specific textbook providing worked examples, exam-level questions and many practice exercises, in accordance to the new Edexcel AS and Advanced GCE specification.
2004-11-07 Do not rely on this textbook
I unfortunatly had to use this textbook for my AS level maths course- I wish I didn't. Much of it is incomprehensible and I learnt very little from it. The explanations of the basic topics are passable, and you may even understand it after the 5th read through, but the more complex topics are so poorly explained that you need someone or something else to gain any understanding- the long rambling section on the Simplex method will induce tears of pain and leave you understanding very little, other than the true worth of this book- very little. The hand-shaking theorem, although a basic concept, is explained so poorly as to leave your mind numbed and for you to have learnt nothing. There are two advantages to this textbook:
1) It does have many exercises and exam style questions, like the others in the Heinneman series
2) It's quite short, and so is welcomingly over and done with quickly.
I did worst on the Decision module of my AS Maths, supposedly the "nicest" and "easiest" of the modules, and I fear that some of the blame must fall on this trully unintelligible book.
