2006-07-02 A warning about what could happen

Chalker is most well known got his scifi/fantasy books, the best being the Well of Souls. This is neither fantasy or strictly scifi, but politics. Not politics of the present, but some time in the near future.
A series of unexplained plagues break out, striking randomly, not necessarily fatal, but in some cases destroying the mind. The Americans panic, and surrender their civil liberties to stop the terrorists.
I won't tell you the solution, as it is a surprise. But why did I say that it caries a warning?
Using the terrorist threat, the government imposes a state of emergency, and the people for the most part don#t complain.
This book was written nearly 20 years before 9/11, and I can see that we are doing the same thing, standing by and letting our liberties go. This is a timely warning.
It is not a dry tome, but an entertaining story, just that it becomes more relevant.
