2001-07-15 A glimpse into the unknown of a killers mind
While the overall idea for this book was quite ingenious, write to a few of the most notorious killers known, (John Wayne Gacy being the main topic), I felt that more depth could of been shown with the other killers that Jason Moss corresponded with.No doubt, being alone in a cell face to face with Gacy has to be about the most extreme and frightening situation anyone could imagine, and full credit must be given to Jason for achieving this to its end. But it does tend to raise a few questions - namely, how could the authorities let an 18 year old student correspond so intensly and sexually graphically with Gacy (and vice versa)without any scrutinisation what-so-ever? As to the fact that Gacy was (by all accounts)a celebrity among death row inmates, and therefore the guards tended to turn a blind eye, how on earth could this young lad have been allowed to visit with a known and convicted murderer of 33 young boys, many of whom were Jason's age? If none of these points alone began to raise any alarm bells, then surely the fact that the prison guards themselves (who seemed to be more than willing to leave Gacy and Jason alone together for several hours without any surveillance cameras operating), should be a severe warning to all authorities within the prison system.
These people are not celebrities and should not be treated as such. They are convicted killers. Maybe some of the blame for the status these killers receive can be laid at our own doors, for it's people like us, who take a genuine interest into the crimes and the minds of these killers, that keep them in the public eye. Never forget what these in-humane people did, the crimes they committed, and never be so assured of yourself to think that you could be in control of them for even 1 second. Jason Moss realised this fact when facing John Wayne Gacy in a confined cell!
Overall, the book had potential and did a least shed some insight into the minds of these killers. It is worth your time and money to read and full praise must go to Jason Moss for taking on such an extreme project at such an early age.
