Jim Orford trained in clinical psychology at the Maudsley Hospital, Institute of Psychiatry, London, and later obtained his PhD at the Addiction Research Unit at the Institute. He is co-editor of The Journal of Community and Applied Social Psychology, and in 1992 Wiley published his Community Psychology: Theory and Practice. He now heads the Alcohol, Drugs and Addiction Research Group at the University of Birmingham
