Gender Outlaw is the work of a woman who has been through some changes - a former heterosexual male, Scientologist and IBM salesperson - now a lesbian writer and actor making regular rounds of the U.S. talk-shows. Kate Bornstein covers the `mechanics' of her surgery; everything we always wanted to know about gender (but were too confused to ask); and examines the place and politics of the transgendered vis-a-vis `society at large'. Also included is the author's stage-play, Hidden: A Gender. A truly original and stimulating book; beneath the witty observations and incisive comment lie the foundations of a radical new politics of sexuality and gender. A manifesto, a memoir, and a performance all in one.
2002-03-13 EVERYONE should read this book!
Kate Bornstein takes the whole concept of gender and rips it to pieces fantastically well. Personally I wasn't overly interested in the oft repeated (throughout the TG community) shamanic references and history of 'gender blur' as she calls it but the rest of the book makes fascinating reading. Her play "Hidden: A gender" is included in the book and makes stunning reading...to describe it as hard hitting doesn't even come close! All in all this book should make interesting reading for everyone but really should be a required text for any transexual struggling to clamber out of the closet (haven't we all been there?). You'll feel 10 foot tall after reading this one!similar books
