Media French: A Vocabulary of Contemporary Usage is a first-rate guide to the terms and expressions of today's media. It offers comprehensive and clear commentary to those who are studying, teaching or translating contemporary French and has already become one of my key reference works. --Dr Kate Griffiths, Swansea University.
This up-to-the-minute guide to French idiom will be invaluable for readers who have a solid foundation in French and who wish to increase their confidence in using the idioms of the contemporary French language which they hear and read in today s press and media. Aimed at advanced learners of French, translators, interpreters or anyone following current affairs, Media French: A Vocabulary of Contemporary Usage is designed to supplement a good French-English dictionary by providing translated headwords of key idiom as encountered in social, political, economic, legal and journalistic usage. In addition, after each headword a selection of actual examples taken from the quality press is provided, giving clear, concise and contemporary examples of its use. Readers who are already familiar with the French language will be encouraged to go beyond mere understanding of contemporary French, and to feel confident of being able to comprehend, speak and write convincingly in the French idiom of the 21st century.
The first edition of this title was published by UWP in 1990 under the name "Newspaper French". The aim of this book is to provide an up-to-date guide to current French vocabulary as it is found in the contemporary press and media. The range of examples are drawn from newspapers, internet, journals and television. In addition, words relating to semi-specialised areas such as the legal sphere, banking and finance, administration, commerce and politics are also included. The book is not intended to fulfill the role of a dictionary, rather it is intended to be an easily accessible companion reflecting current French usage. Short examples are given for each word or phrase in meaningful context with English-translations of head-words. This new edition, by the original author, will reflect the impact of changing socio-political and cultural realities in France since the first edition was published 15 or so years ago.
Dr. Adrian Ritchie is former Head of French, Department of Modern Languages, Bangor University and the author of Newspaper French (UWP, 1990), French for Administration, Business and Commerce (UWP, 1993), Media French (UWP, 1997), A Selection of the Political Journalism of Guy de Maupassant (Peter Lang, 1999), Selected Chroniques by Guy de Maupassant (1881-1889) (Lang, 2001), A Further Selection of the Chroniques of Guy de Maupassant (Lang, 2003).
