Thinking Of You - The Ultimate Escapist Read
Jill Mansell, unlike other writers in the rom-com arena, seems to get better with every book she writes. Thinking of You is her latest offering and proves that it is possible to get better with age!

Ginny Holland, a best selling author if left rattling around in her house on her own after daughter Jem goes to university. Lonely, she advertises her spare room for rent. Instead of a happy roommate, she gets moaning Laurel who is still hung up on her ex-boyfriend. If that wasn’t enough, Ginny finds herself lusting after two men who can only be bad for her. Will Ginny get the man of her dreams, or will he be the one that gets away?

Mansell has a disarming ability to create characters that you already know and that tends to make her books impossible to put down. This book is no different. It is charmingly written, hopelessly funny and will make you forget all of your own troubles as soon as you read the first page.

2002-09-24 Songs of the Shaman

Coming to this book as a practitioner of shamanism rather than as an anthropologist I perhaps have a different slant on a review than others might. I have a deep interest in finding out about indigenous spiritual practices in order to see how my own might better be served.
The author catalogues shamanic traditions throughout Korea and explores both differences and similarities. The reader is made aware of how the practices change from region to region. It was interesting to note how the Korean government has affected the traditional spiritual practices of their people.
The book itself is hard going, as any serious study can be, but for the student of anthropology or someone who is conversant with the technical language sometimes employed it offers a fascinating look at the spiritual practices of a distant, and often hidden, part of the world.
The only drawback is it's price. Educational and technical texts are often pricey. I was lucky to find my copy second hand. The recommended price is somewhat off putting.
