Jill Mansell, unlike other writers in the rom-com arena, seems to get better with every book she writes. Thinking of You is her latest offering and proves that it is possible to get better with age!
Ginny Holland, a best selling author if left rattling around in her house on her own after daughter Jem goes to university. Lonely, she advertises her spare room for rent. Instead of a happy roommate, she gets moaning Laurel who is still hung up on her ex-boyfriend. If that wasn’t enough, Ginny finds herself lusting after two men who can only be bad for her. Will Ginny get the man of her dreams, or will he be the one that gets away?
Mansell has a disarming ability to create characters that you already know and that tends to make her books impossible to put down. This book is no different. It is charmingly written, hopelessly funny and will make you forget all of your own troubles as soon as you read the first page.

2005-01-14 Totally wonderful escapism
In 2001 my sister asked me along to the cinema with the little boy she was a nanny to. On asking "what film?" I was told: "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone". I agreed but ordered all 4 books (in adult format box set) just so that "I knew what I was letting myself in for". Prior to that I hadn't heard of HP - other than a little bit here and there. From the first few chapters of the first book I was totally and utterly hooked. I finished all 4 within 5 days! (I finished the 5th one in 24 hours!! Got out of bed at midnight and everything! Totally crazy isn't it!)
Certainly, the films are wonderful adaptions but the books just give the reader so much more. They transport you further into this vast, amazing creation of J K Rowling's. It would be impossible to put every single piece of information into the films because there is just so much of it. But it's never overbearing... she has been very clever about it. You don't know it's a hint until maybe 2 books later when she refers back to it and you think "ah, I remember that!"
Never before has an author managed to capture my imagination to such an extent. The immensely intricate and complex world of HP is made up from fact, mythology, legend and some of JKR's own ideas. The sheer amount of information nestled in amongst the main storyline of each book is astonishing. Re-reading is essential to comprehend the world that she has created.
Each book has its own storyline but the ever present "background story" is woven throughout each one, adding snippets of information here and there ... slowly building up to the ultimate show-down in book 7. Who will be victorious ... Harry or Lord Volde- ... sorry, "You-Know-Who"? We don't know yet, but the journey has been wonderful so far!
Any adult who says "I'm not reading those because they're children's books" is truly missing out on something wonderful. Harry and the desperate struggle against evil that he is facing is intriguing and captivating. Five out so far, No 6 in July 2005 and the final one still to come ... Personally, I can't wait!
