2000-09-30 Good pathfinding Soccer fiction

I read this a year after Hornby's Fever Pitch, when I bought it thru Amazon. I had always meant to get the book when it was first Press reviewed but never got round to it. As a pathfinding Soccer novel it was great. Perhaps suffered from the writing by a good journalist who is not a great novellist, Glanville does capture some of the madness of a young man seduced and swept up in the 70s sports scene, and the smell of sport boardroom corrutpion and greed as well! But cf. to Hornby it's rather tame. I've passed it onto my young friend the N.Ireland TV comedian and Man Utd. fanantic Patrick Kielty so he can comment further.
