2006-09-13 Crack those transforms

There comes a time when mechanical engineers and chemical engineers have to get to grips with Laplace transforms in order to enter the world of electrical engineers and control engineers. Laplace transforms convert difficult differential equations into simple algebra problems where solutions are relatively easy.

I was advised that I needed a good knowledge of Laplace Transforms in order to get to grips with several areas of my engineering course but predominantly control engineering. I had great success using Ken Stroud's books: Engineering Mathematics-Programmes and Problems and Further Engineering Mathematics and spotted this one specifically on Laplace transforms.

With Ken Stroud as your personal tutor he guides you through without pain and anguish. Ken uses a technique of taking you through simple examples, on a "frame by frame" basis, allowing you to interact with the book. The level of complexity gradually increases and by repeated worked examples you get to grips with the theory and practice. You are encouraged to note key proofs and transforms for easy reference and you soon memorize the main building blocks. Once I had completed the book I managed to get straight into my maths course example sheets and tackle them unaided. Working through Kens self teaching technique I converted myself into someone not only confident but competent in this area.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get on top of Laplace transforms whether they just want to pass an exam or really understand what is going on.
