Described 'more a labour of love than a business,' this is the only real attempt to list all the piano manufacturers there have ever been in the world including, where possible:
- their addresses
- breif history
- details of their factories
- and (most importantly for the piano trade) serial numbers of all pianos made by a given company, and the corresponding year that it was made.
It has over 12,000 manufacturers listed. Piano dealers and connoisseurs world-wide rely on this book to date pianos.
One will come across many pianos in England and the rest of Europe that are not in the book (Mr. Pierce was a North American), but such pianos are not normally very good anyway.
All credit to Mr. Pierce and his offspring for persevering in such hard a job.
