2006-08-31 A fascinating account of desperation and death
A journey that to onlookers appears innocent enough but don't believe all that your eyes are telling you. With Jack, her dead boyfriend, stashed in the trunk of her car and travelling towards Seattle to meet, George, yet another boyfriend, this young woman is a person that you would only wish to meet in someone else's nightmares. With a hurricane hot on her heels, the many aspects of her life comes under scrutiny including her relationships with her lovers and parents.J. Eric Miller truly creates a fascinating account of desperation and death in Decomposition. Over the the short period of the journey the protagonist undertakes, we learn of the experiences with her, now, dead boyfriend, Jack, and how she copes with the aftermath of his destruction and inevitable decay.
Following her thought processes really give an amazing insight into the mind of this strong minded woman. Picking up an unlikely companion, namely one of the chickens that she 'rescues' from certain death, for some of her journey injects humour into the tale. That sniff of joviality soon turns to disgust, though, as the poor creature consumes parts of Jack we'd rather not think about and eventually succumbs to its own gruesome death throes.
Despite the apparent morbidity, Decomposition is a compelling enough read that will definitely keep you page turning until the very end.
