Neon Genesis is known for being a deep, complicated and dark series, about a boy forced to face his own mortality and responsibility for the lives of others. Angelic Days naturally throws all this out of the window, and reframes Evangelion as a light-hearted romantic comedy, with Asuka now Shinji's best friend, Misato is his teacher and Rei is now a talkative, hyperactive girl desperately trying to win Shinji's heart. The art is very poor compared to that of the original Neon Genesis Evangelion manga, and the story is all but absent; it's telling that in this first volume, we don't see a single Eva or Angel - the closest we get is a few characters wearing plug-suits, and Kaworu muttering a few obtuse statements. Overall, the series is entertaining for people who liked Evangelion for the characters, but a let down for people who preferred the action side.
