2008-06-24 America comes to the rescue, again!
Having been disappointed by one of Eric Flints other novels (1812) I was not expecting much from this book, so I was pleasantly surprised to find a book of nearly 600 pages I couldn't put down.An american town is thrown across time and finds itself in Germany during the 30 Years War. What follows is an attempt by them to bring modern day equality and culture to a war zone. Obviously having modern weapons and vehicles helps, tightly packed formations of pikemen stand no chance against snipers with modern rifles, shotguns and the rate of fire unimaginable in 17th century Europe.
A very enjoyable read if you ignore some of the flaws, which include:
Gung-ho Americans defeating all before them
Europeans discarding their own beliefs and joining the Americans
All the Americans are 'good guys'. Where was the prison, drug addicts etc when the town moved?
All the instances of love at first sight
However, on the plus side:
A good portrayal of how little regard there was for life back then.
A dungeons & dragons playing boy becomes one of the books heroes.
An amusing scene where psychological warfare includes playing Elvis Presley at the enemy!
