2008-03-24 A charming and delicious tale that'll leave you warmed within.

This book is light in tone and playful: reading it you feel as if you should be in flip flops on a summer break. However, like a tasty breakfast of fruit salad with a hot chocolate and marshmallows on the side, for all its charming froth this story is deceptively nutritious.
Although her parents are missing at sea, and presumed dead by the rest of the town Primrose just knows that they are ok and will be back. Showing amazing and amusing resilience in the face of a whole host of disasters, such as losing a digit not once but twice, Primrose is infused with a gentle cocktail of hope and faith. There's a range of quirky characters from the increasingly mad Miss Perfidy with whom she stays initially; her surprising Uncle Jack; Miss Honeycut the less than perfect school guidance counselor; and Miss Bowzer who runs the local café in her own determined way - everything on a waffle. With some wonderful descriptive phrases and a sprinkling of simple recipes, this small town tale is full of wry observations and peppered with wisdom. With a candy-sweet ending, it's suitable from about age 9 but the gentle truths could last for life.
