2005-06-03 Human History
Fred Feldkamp writes in the introduction that Cuppy never lost sight of the fact his subjects were ultimately human. This is ultimately the core of his humour in representing these historic figures. As the subtitles found on the hardback indicate, they are humbled. So as far as entertainment goes, no complaints. My gripe is with the content. I acknowledge that that isn't the main purpose of the book, but his portraits come off more as very brief (and very rudimentary) anecdotes, rather than hilarious insights into these characters' lives.
As such, I could glean only humour, but scarcely any knowledge from the book. As far as the humour goes, one could do better with the Hitchhiker's series, a bit of Pratchett, or the Holy Grail of humour, Woodhouse.
