2003-10-03 At best merely average, at worst …
This is a collection of five Judge Dredd adventures. There’s a heavily stereotyped oirish sequel to Emerald Isle, Innocents Abroad, with an Irish judge visiting the big city, four wives seeking revenge on their extortive husbands, a suicide fad, and satires on the tv shows Blind Date and Twin Peaks. All stories are written by Garth Ennis and occasionally show signs of his cruel dark humour, but unfortunately it’s too occasional. By Judge Dredd standards this is, at its best, average material, but by Ennis’ standards it’s just painfully poor and haphazard. Presumably this is an opportunistic release by Titan attempting to cash in on his subsequent success with the likes of Preacher rather than as a showcase of his early talent.
The best thing going for it is the artwork by Greg Staples, which is by turns kinetic, sketchy and cartoonish, and rather different from the styles normally associated with Judge Dredd. A very poor excuse for buying it nonetheless.
