2007-08-04 A tender, reflective novel

This book is a must for anyone who has ever felt nostalgic for their childhood days, for long hot summers, packets of peardrops, freshly cut grass and the songs of The Beatles. Philip Gillam writes tenderly in this novel which has music, friendship and ordinary family life at its core. Its sentimental, bittersweet tone is not recommended for cynical readers but it is hard not to be moved by the genuine warmth with which the characters and their strengths and weaknesses are painted. The book begins with the protagonist still in his mother's womb - and moves on from the 1950s to the 21st century. The characters experience tragedy and the paranormal as well as more everyday events, and there are plenty of plot threads to keep the reader intrigued. This tender, reflective novel is the ideal page-turner to take with you on holiday. Recommended!
