Born in 1962, Colin Fry received his first message at the age of 10, and became a professional medium at 17. Since 1994 he has toured in Finland, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and America, and in 2002 he presented his first TV show, 6ixth Sense, on Living TV. He lives in mid-Sussex.
YOU HAVE NOTHING TO FEAR BUT FEAR ITSELF
It is something I myself had to learn. In my early twenties I was managing
a carpet store. It was a family-run business and I had worked there for
several years. Meanwhile I knew that I had psychic ability. I'd been
sitting in a basic development group for a few years, but as a practising
medium I was doing very little. Many people have psychic tendencies, but do
not always choose to develop them. Those that do decide, do so at different
ages and stages in their lives. As it is not something that can be taught
through conventional courses and study, development is done in a person's
free time - which invariably needs to be financed by another job or
profession. A person with psychic or mediumistic tendencies will join a
development circle for several years before they would dare take money for
their services, and there are not many who can then make a living from
mediumship alone.
Back to the carpet store: one day an elderly couple came in to buy a
carpet. The people who worked there were pretty rude about people who came
into the shop to discuss having new carpets fitted but would never go
through with it. They used to call them `WOTS' - `Waste of Timers'. I
looked up from my paperwork to find that all of my employees had amazingly
disappeared at the same time and I was left to deal with this elderly
gentleman and his wife in a wheelchair. I spent a large part of the morning
showing them every available sample shade of red
in the warehouse but I confess that I didn't expect them to actually buy.
So I was surprised when they asked me round the next day to measure their
flat for the carpets.
The next day I arrived and put my briefcase down in their lounge and got my
tape measure out. At that moment a voice came to me and said, `Tell this
man that you know that he uses this room for séances.' I tried to ignore
it, but the voice just got louder.
So I turned to the old man and said, `Look, you can tell me to leave and
you will probably think I am quite mad, but you conduct séances in this
room, don't you?'
`Yes.' He didn't look surprised but asked me how I knew.
I just came out with the truth. `Well look, this voice has just told me.'
He grabbed me by the arm and rushed me into the kitchen where his wife was
sitting in her wheelchair and he said, `Tell my wife what you just told
me.' Before I could utter a word she looked me in the eye and said, `Oh
yes, we knew you were coming.'
I was a bit freaked out by this (most conversations with customers start
with `Do you take milk?' and `How many sugars?') so I didn't take it
seriously. `Yes. Of course you knew I was coming, because you invited me to
measure the flat.'
Ignoring me she continued, `We've been running a mediumistic physical
phenomena circle for the last twenty-five years with my husband's mum, but
since her death have continued sitting once a month with another trance
medium. He told us that a young man would come to us during the course of
his work, he would identify himself as a medium and we were to take the
responsibility of developing him. So, would you come and sit with us?' If
you think that light came forth from the heavens and angels sang hallelujah
then I'm afraid nothing could be further from the truth. My gut feeling was
to run for my life, but as I went home that evening there was something
bothering me. Why wasn't I pursuing my mediumship? Why wasn't I going for
it and making it happen? Maybe if I went along and met a new set of people,
people who were prepared to experiment with physical phenomena, I might
find something new and exciting in my life.
Most of all I realised that perhaps the reason I was not developing into a
professional full-time medium was fear - the fear of failure. It is only
human nature to be afraid of failing at something, but it must not be
allowed to stop you improving your life. As a young boy I can clearly
remember listening to elderly friends of my parents or relatives talk about
the things they wished they could have done. Like all young people I never
really stopped to think about whether I would ever feel regret because I
didn't take an opportunity. Now I'm older I too have to face the reality
that I will regret what I haven't done rather than celebrating what I have
done. You will never have a life free of regret but you can have a life
where you have much to celebrate instead. The way to do that is to stop
talking about what you should be doing and just do it! `But,' I hear you
say, `there isn't a right time.' Absolute rubbish. There is never a right
time. The right time is the time you decide to act. Gather your courage and
go out there and do it!
