All you need to know to manage COPD in your practice
COPD (the spectrum of diseases including chronic bronchitis, emphysema, long-standing irreversible asthma and small airways disease) is one of the most common and important respiratory disorders seen in primary care. The full updated third edition of this practical and concise handbook shows you how to manage COPD in primary care - successfully and with worthwhile outcomes for your patients.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the new term for a disease pattern that includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. COPD is a common disorder, affecting 1-2% of the adult population, and is known from recent reports to be rapidly increasing in women. It causes considerable disability in sufferers with shortness of breath, cough and sputum and sadly, once established is unlikely to improve. The disease is closely linked with smoking and at present the only treatment that slows progression is to stop smoking. COPD has until very recently been neglected in its identification and treatment. This negative attitude is beginning to change and there is a great deal that can be done to help patients improve their symptoms and well-being. This book outlines in a very easy to read format all aspects of diagnosis and treatment of this important disease. It is the first to provide a comprehensive description of management in Primary Care.
Dr David Bellamy is a GP Principal with a special interest in
respiratory medicine at the James Fisher Medical Centre, Bournemouth. He is a
member of the COPD Guidelines Committee. Rachel Booker is COPD Module
Leader for the National Respiratory Training Centre, Warwick. She is a member of
the British Thoracic Society COPD Consortium.
