2005-06-05 A brilliant insight into Dr Atkin's life and work
I picked this book up late this afternoon and finished it within 3 hours - I just couldn't put it down. As a convert to the Atkins' way of eating, I was interested to learn more about Dr Atkins' life and work. The book is written by a journalist who is obviously biased to the low carb way of eating, but that doesn't make the book any less interesting to read. She covers his life, from that of his grandparent's all the way to his death in 2003.
I found it a sad read in parts - Dr Atkins refused to fund research to prove the validity of his claims for most of his life, believing that the weight loss amongst his patients was proof enough. As such, he fought to gain credibility for many years, only gaining it shortly before he passed away.
I previously had strong opinions on the Atkins food range, believing him to have "sold out" by marketing processed foods; this book helped to change my viewpoint.
A worthwhile read for anyone - whether convert or skeptic. Awarded 4 stars due to potential for bias.
