In 2004, the Racing Post asked its readers to nominate their three favourite racehorses. Horse racing's bible was not interested in which horses its readers considered to be the greatest in terms of merit. Rather, they wanted to find out those which meant the most to its readers. Over two months, thousands of votes were collected. From the nominations was compiled this definitive list of the 100 most popular horses of all time to race in Britain and Ireland - on the Flat and over the Jumps.

By now this is a well known book and nearly everyone will have read the poll results in the Racing Post. But it is worth reminding people that this book is one to have in their collections and a great gift to give to anyone you know who has not bought it.

I wanted to give it 5 stars, and on concept I would, except for the black and white photos. I realise some of them are unavoidable but more colour would have been great so we could remember the silks the horses we voted for carried.

At the time of the poll there was much debate about who would be the top 3 and what order they would end up in. But I had a great clue which made it all obvious to me, a painting by Susan Crawford that many of us have in the house. We Three Kings. And there it was, exactly how she painted them.

How we voted was of course related to the time and some horses were omitted or included who may not have been had the poll been run another time.

Nevertheless it was fun to relive their glory days one and all, and this is a book to have and to hold close.
