White Van Man: is he a 21st century rogue of the road, or the unsung hero that keeps many unseen wheels of society in motion? White Van Man - A History written by Stephen Vokins looks to understand who he is, why he thinks and behaves in the manner he does, and bridges the gap between him and the rest of the motoring world.

From historical settings through to life on the open road, White Van Man - A History is a unique and humourous motoring book which will both fascinate and amuse you!

By popular consent, BBC Radio 2 s early morning presenter Sarah Kennedy is credited with identifying White Van Man as a specific species of road user in the mid 1990s, but this does not mean that she invented them. Indeed, White Van Men are a species of great antiquity, who have travelled the roads of Britain for upwards of 2 millennia, only recently adopting the Transit and other similar vans as their workspaces. Their modern name, which concentrates more on their wheels than their trade, is misleading in terms of specifying what makes them different from other road users and robs them of their historical significance.No-one knows who built Stonehenge, or how they transported the stones from Wales to the site, and it would be historically inaccurate to suggest that the contractors brought in to perform this miraculous feat used a fleet of crude wagons to transport their tools, perhaps with one for the foreman to travel in, but it nevertheless creates an amusing mental picture, especially if these wagons had some white covering to protect their contents. Historians would despair of such foolish imaginings without a shred of evidence to support them, but as no-one knows how the monument itself was built, just maybe they did use some sort of wheeled wagons, in which case, their pilots could be considered White Van Man s earliest ancestors.
